Mulliken Clock

Celebrate the beginning of spring semester and the return of the "heartbeat" of the Ernst Mayr Library, the historic tall case clock. Made by Jonathan Mulliken (1746-1782) in Newbury, MA, this clock which belonged to Alexander Agassiz was given to the museum by his son Maximilian in 1930. It was reinstalled in the library in December 2024 after a monthslong restoration of the case and works. 

Pictured here is one of the clock's decorative brass spandrels, a capped figure warming her hands by the fire, representing Winter. The other three corners feature a wine barrel, a sickle, and a wreath of flowers, i.e. Summer, Autumn, and Spring.

Drop by between 2:45-5:00 PM on Friday, 1/31/25, for snacks and tours, and listen to the Mulliken clock chime on the hour. Bring your questions, meet the library staff, or just take a break.
